At-Home Care Tips by Age

Every age has different dental needs. Here's what to focus on at each stage!

Infants (0-12 months)

  • • Wipe gums with a soft, damp cloth after feedings
  • • Once teeth appear, brush with a soft infant toothbrush and water
  • • Avoid putting baby to bed with a bottle (causes "baby bottle tooth decay")
  • • Schedule first dental visit by age 1

Toddlers (1-3 years)

  • • Brush twice daily with a rice-sized smear of fluoride toothpaste
  • • Help your child brush—they don't have the dexterity to do it alone yet!
  • • Limit juice and sugary snacks
  • • Transition from bottle to sippy cup by age 1

Preschoolers (3-5 years)

  • • Brush twice daily with a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste
  • • Start flossing when teeth touch
  • • Supervise brushing—kids this age still need help!
  • • Make brushing fun with songs, timers, or apps

School-Age (6-12 years)

  • • Continue brushing twice daily and flossing once daily
  • • Supervise brushing until age 7-8 to ensure thoroughness
  • • Consider sealants to protect permanent molars from cavities
  • • Encourage healthy snacks (cheese, veggies, nuts) over sugary treats
  • • If playing sports, use a mouthguard to protect teeth!

Teens (13+ years)

  • • Brush twice daily, floss daily, and use mouthwash
  • • Watch out for sugary energy drinks and soda—they're cavity culprits!
  • • If wearing braces, use special flossers and brush after every meal
  • • Avoid tobacco and vaping—they harm teeth and gums
  • • Continue regular dental visits every 6 months
